Have you ever played the game of mercy? I wouldn’t recommend it. As a child, I played it with my older brother. I never won. My brother has always been at least 100 pounds heavier than I, so he won every strength game we ever played. With this game, you interlock fingers and twist and turn, trying to inflict pain until the other person shouts, “Mercy!” It was not my favorite game. I would shout for mercy when our hands touched. Occasionally, my brother would prolong the hand torture a fraction longer exerting his muscle over me. That’s the nature of mercy. One person has power, and the other person depends on their compassion. In life’s grand scheme, God is the one with the power, and we are the ones shouting for mercy. But God is so much nicer than my brother. He’s also way stronger. I’ve cried out for mercy several times in my life. When I first realized my sinfulness, I reached for God’s mercy. I was a child, and I’d never heard about justice and what that would require of me. I raised my hand when the scary guy asked if I wanted to accept Jesus. The next time I cried out for mercy was when I had made some huge mistakes in life. Things I knew I shouldn’t do, but I did anyway, and the consequences were awful. I called out to God, confessing my sinfulness and turning from it back to Him. I’ve also cried for mercy when the terrible things beyond my control piled up and threatened to keep on coming. I wasn’t sure how much more I could take, so I threw myself on mercy and hoped for the best. God is powerful and just. He is also loving, kind, and merciful. To understand the magnitude of God’s mercy, we really need to recognize God’s greatness. We must acknowledge His power and justice. We often focus on God’s grace and love and think little about His righteousness and justice. It’s easy to get caught up in God’s lovingkindness and fail to acknowledge the justice side of things. How could a loving God punish anyone? But justice is a necessary part of the world. We reap what we sow. It’s fair and right. And even though we may not like it when we face the consequences of our actions, we understand the need for those consequences. The fairness of it. A payment must be made for wrongs. No one gets to live however they want, hurting others, profaning God, and reveling in moral depravity. An accounting must be given. And God is merciful. His grace extends even to those who flaunt their freedom to do whatever they want. And His mercy falls on those who would call on Him. Call out for God’s mercy today. Acknowledge His power. He loves you and wants to be merciful with you. Read over these verses and go under the mercy of our loving Father God.
