I had to make a life-changing decision recently. It messed me up for an entire weekend. My pro/con list didn’t help. I’d exhausted the ears of my friends. I even called one of those talk shows. I needed guidance, and I needed it fast.
Perhaps you’re thinking I should have prayed. You’re right, and I did. A lot. But God isn’t in the habit of telling me exactly what to do. I looked for signs, but I didn’t see any. I poured through my Bible (or my Bible app) and found lots of great verses, but nothing shed any light on which way I should go.
Wouldn’t it be nice for God to just tell us what to do. If he’d spell it out, then we would do it. Right?
But that’s not how it normally happens. Many of the examples in the Bible show God leading people specifically when they weren’t asking for his guidance. Moses wasn’t looking to go back to Egypt. David was tending sheep. Peter was fishing. Paul marched on a mission.
They weren’t looking for any guidance. They were just living, doing their best to love God right where they were.
We make all kinds of decisions in life. Some are clearer than others. The Bible gives us a lot of direction, but God doesn’t micromanage all our steps. He, like all wonderful parents, wants us to grow up.
There are many things we’re not supposed to have other people decide for us. We do, sometimes, because it’s easier than trying to figure it out for ourselves. It also helps if the decision goes south. You have someone else to blame. But that’s not grown up living. God has something better.
He knows we need His guidance. The world is a big, confusing place. It’s easy to lose our way and need help.
God sets His Holy Spirit in our hearts to help us. John 16:13 says, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” God will guide us, but it might not look like we’re expecting it to look. No burning bushes. No voices from the sky.
There might be a verse or a word of direction from someone else. He might speak truth into our hearts and give us eyes to see.
Or He might expect us to trust Him with whatever choice is made.
After I made my big decision and moved on, I realized it wasn’t about the choice. It was about knowing God would be with me no matter which way I went. His guidance in life goes deeper than the surface we live so much of our lives on.
The guidance God offers is rich with truth and life, and it’s real. It just takes a measure of faith to hold on to it.
